The other day, I was talking to my friend on the phone about how Faro lost his favorite cat toy many months ago. It’s a unique ball with just the right tempting rattle, texture, and weight that lights up his life. I purchased this toy when visiting said friend upstate last year and asked if she could please pick up another one to replace it. (I haven’t been able to find a similar one.)
The next day, Faro reached his paw under one of my bookcases. When I got down onto the floor and took a look, I saw the beloved rattle-ball wedged way back against the wall. I retrieved it for him and he chased it like a maniac all over the apartment.
A cat loving a favorite toy isn’t surprising, nor is it odd that the toy ends up lost under a bookcase. What never ceases to surprise me though is when, in the midst of this normal day-to-day life, Faro gives me a response to something I’ve thought or said in passing. He’s never, ever shown interest in finding a lost toy before. It really never occurred to me that he would find it, much less shortly after my conversation about it.
Recently I was asked how I got into Reiki and intuitive animal communication. When I think about the journey to where I am now, all the twist and turns and magical moments that I never saw coming really amaze me. I truly never imagined that I’d end up doing what I’m doing. I actually spent many years “knowing” what my career path would look like, and it turned out completely different. I’m still surprised by it.
The best is when the universe creates something you never saw coming, bringing the truth with it like only it can.
I remember early on reading at my first psychic fair, a man asked me to connect with his childhood pet, a hamster. I thought, ok, this will probably be a light and cute conversation. The hamster ended up talking about how he had helped the man through a very difficult situation in his youth, and that he helped him know he’d always be ok. The man completely understood the message and was truly touched that his hamster would bring up this loving message. I hadn’t seen that coming and suddenly understood big love from a tiny hamster is a given.
The day one of my beloved cats passed away, I was inconsolable. Even though she gave me an overwhelming feeling of peace when she transitioned, I missed her so much already and was feeling so painfully separated from her. That evening, I received a notification on my phone that someone had liked one of my Instagram posts. The person’s handle was the literal, kooky nickname I had for my cat. The post they liked was a quote that said, “Your intuition is your super power.” Instantly I knew my cat and I would always be connected. And I was shocked — I never dreamed my cat would reach out to me on Instagram! (The person with that handle never liked any of my posts before or after that one, that day.)
I really do feel that expecting the unexpected is the key to growing, expanding, and evolving. Cosmic surprises mean we’re trusting the universe, showing up in life authentically, and are open to being guided by something we can’t necessarily see… I take that back — sometimes we do see it. Over a decade ago, when I was on my way to venture into receiving a Reiki session for my chronic health issues, I paused on the corner of busy street and asked the universe, is this really the best thing to do right now? Instantly a tiny white feather blew in front of my face, hovered at eye level, flipped three times, and blew away. I thanked the universe profusely for that epic thumbs up. (Then I studied Reiki, did Reiki for a cat, the cat talked to me, and here I am.)
You don’t have to work as a Reiki Master or medium to ride the surprise wave. You just have to know it’s real. Desire something, then let it go and expect the universe to blow your mind beyond what you can imagine. Follow all the right-place-right-time stuff (serendipities, synchronicities) to the gifts you’ve never seen coming. Or, just notice how your animal reads your mind on any given Tuesday. 💜
